The art of sculpture in Nepal with a few exceptions is based on the religious themes taken from Buddhism and Hinduism. The spread of these two religions from the Indian subcontinent brought with it the strong influence and ideology in creating the sculptures. Nevertheless, Nepalese art developed in its own character with each passing time. The reasons lay in the Nepal's geographic location and the extra-ordinary ingenuity of Nepalese artisans especially the "Newars"- the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley. This ancient craftsmanship or practice has been continued by Newari families for generations and is the prime income source for this community in today's context. Their unique craftsmanship and artistic caliber along with their strong fascination towards their religion have earned them name and respect throughout the world. |
